On 6 September 2026, the spirit of determination and hope swept through the streets from Scotchman to Sakhile as learners and community members laced up their shoes for the inaugural 5km fun run. The event, organised by local organisations including Mganduzweni Development Centre, Sinothando Consultation and Therapy Sessions and the Institute of Health Programmes and Systems (IHPS), aimed to inspire change at Sakhile Secondary School a school striving to overcome its challenging reputation.

Sakhile Secondary, nestled in the heart of Mganduzweni Trust, has in recent years battled negative headlines: violence among learners, weapons on school grounds, drug use and chronic tardiness. With sports missing from the school’s daily life, community leaders saw an opportunity to redirect young minds and boost morale through athletics.

“We believe in motivating our children about the importance of education and giving them positive activities,” shared Adolf Mhaule, the event’s initiator. “This is just the beginning I’ll be moving around all the schools.”

Despite the organisers’ hopes for a bigger turnout, only a small group of learners participated. However, their enthusiasm was infectious. “I’m grateful for the chance to run today,” said Lusito Mathabela, winner of the Under 25 category. “I love sports and this marathon taught me patience never give up until you cross the finish line.”

The race featured three categories: Under 19 Boys and Girls, Under 25 and 25 Plus. The winners were celebrated with medals and sneakers, courtesy of supportive sponsors Changan, White Hazy Taxi Association and Laduma Hardware. Mpilo and Nosipho claimed gold in the Under 19 categories, Lusito triumphed in Under 25 and Bongani Mbuyane led the 25 Plus runners. All participants received silver medals, marking their achievement.

Teacher Magongo, Sakhile’s sports organiser, acknowledged the challenges of building a sports culture amidst limited resources. “We don’t have proper infrastructure, so sports is a challenge. But today is an achievement. We hope sponsors and the community will continue to support us so we can grow this initiative and improve turnout in the future.”

Reflecting on the event, organisers noted the difficulty of hosting on a Saturday and the need to strengthen partnerships with teachers. They plan to work with the education circuit to possibly hold future events during the school week, ensuring greater participation and impact.

“To the community: when there are initiatives like this, your support is vital. Even if you can’t donate money, your presence matters,” said one of the organisers Prince Nyundu. “This is how we change lives and build a better future.”

The organisers expressed deep gratitude to sponsors and all who participated. They remain hopeful that with continued support, Sakhile Secondary School will foster a lasting culture of sports and positive engagement, helping learners shift their focus from challenges to opportunities.
